Work and research scholarship for authors, spoken word artists and musicians

Concept
SPIELART Theatre Festival and ARTIST IN RESIDENCE MUNICH, Villa Waldberta, cooperate to offer a 3-month research and work residency for authors (theatre text, poetry, short story, essay, reportage), spoken word artists, and musicians.

Period of Stay: April 7 until June 26, 2025
The scholarship holder lives in Villa Waldberta in Feldafing on Lake Starnberg and pursues their work project with the support of the Villa Waldberta team and SPIELART Theatre Festival. The subject matter of the research may be freely selected. Participation in at least one public event at Villa Waldberta is expected. SPIELART also plans to make the work in Munich visible in the run-up to or during the festival (October 17 to November 1, 2025) (e.g. as a reading, performance, concert, or publication in the festival papers).

SPIELART Theatre Festival
Biannual international SPIELART Theatre Festival, taking place in autumn, shows performances, theatre, dance and visual arts at different locations in Munich, each accompanied by an extensive discourse and education programme. Since 2017, the focus has been on cooperation with countries on the African continent. The next festival edition is scheduled for October/November 2025. SPIELART wants to enhance and intensify the exchange between international artists and Munich residents. SPIELART is an event of Spielmotor München e.V. (www.spielart.org)

Villa Waldberta
Villa Waldberta in Feldafing on Lake Starnberg (www.air-m.de) features five apartments. The salons on the ground floor are suitable for joint activities with the other guest artists and are regularly used for events with the scholarship holders. Villa Waldberta includes a large park, the Chauffeur's House with an additional apartment, and the Palm House, a studio of approx. 70 m² that can be used as a workspace and for exhibitions, but also for other event formats, all year round.

Remuneration
The guest artists receive a monthly scholarship to the amount of € 1,200 from the City of Munich as part of the residency programme. The accommodation, including kitchen and private bathroom, is rent-free; cost for monthly public transport tickets will be reimbursed. Travel to and from the destination will be covered by SPIELART Theatre Festival. The scholarship holder will receive a fee for any potential events initiated by SPIELART.

Statement towards your interest in the residency and ideas for a research/work project (to a maximum of two/2 pages)
Curriculum vitae (to a maximum of two/2 pages)

This call for applications is aimed exclusively at authors, spoken word artists, and musicians; submissions from other disciplines (directing, dance, curation, etc.) can unfortunately not be considered.

Please note: The period of the research/work stay can neither be postponed, significantly shortened, or split up. It is not possible to apply in pairs or teams.

The applicant's place of residence must be outside Bavaria.

We welcome applications from people of all nationalities, religions, sexual identities, age groups, and social backgrounds. Unfortunately, Villa Waldberta is not freely barrier-free.

Jury and Selection
The selection will be made by a committee consisting of representatives of SPIELART Theatre Festival and ARTIST IN RESIDENCE MUNICH. We will inform you about the success of your application until the end of December 2024.
