The Schuhplattler is a very old dance from the eastern Alpine area which distinguishes itself by characteristic strikes on the dancers’ thighs and shoes and is traditionally only danced by men. The idea of the old folk dances which have survived as popular phenomena until today, has occupied the Italian choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni. For the production FOLK-S he sends a group of actors and actresses and dancers from contemporary dance to South Tyrol to enable them to learn the complicated steps of the Schuhplattler. In FOLK-S, the Schuhplattler is reconstructed in the performance room. Having taken it out of its geographic and cultural context, the focus shifts to the rules and the form of the dance, on rhythm, strictness, and clarity. Dealing with time is of elementary significance: because the performance of FOLK-S always understands itself as an exercise, there is no fixed length. The practice is repeated up to the limits of physical endurance, and in this way, obsessions, fears, and the fragility of the performance are exposed. For the performers of FOLK-S, there is no other time than the present, in a hypnotised state they lose themselves in their ritual and have us spellbound.
At SPIELART, Alessandro Sciarroni‘s work SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME will also be shown.
