Artist talk after the performance on 26.10., moderated by Keith Zenga King (in English)
The jungle in MOWGLI is a nonconformist concept, the dream of a night gone wild, a displaced territory outside and inside of the city and its social construction. The starting point of this work of Sorour Darabi was the title, taken from a track of the French Rap Duo PNL. In MOWGLI the artist explores the perpetual projection of the wilderness on translocal bodies. On an almost empty stage, and in a mix of storytelling, choreography, and poetry, Darabi develops the fragments of the jungle which keep the manoeuvring spaces for our own imagination open. MOWGLI becomes the possibility space for positive acquisition and new discoveries, the performing body rejects fixed attributions and understands „becoming wild“ as a political project. The performance changes between lived and imagined stories and integrates the lyrics of PNL and the sounds of the Iranian singer Gogoosh.
Dangerous, embarrassing, exciting, wild!

The Iranian artist Sorour Darabi is living and working in Paris. In Iran, they worked as a part of the INVISIBLE CENTRE OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE (ICCD), an Iranian organisation, which is also responsible for the Underground Festival UNTIMELY in Tehran. Here, the works of Sorour Darabi were shown before they emigrated to France. While they studied at the Institute Chorégraphique International de Montpellier, they developed the solo SUBJECT TO CHANGE, which deals with the topic of transformation and puts it into question in view of the coexistence with an environment. In 2016, their production FARCI.E was shown at the Festival MONTPELLIER DANSE. Here, Sorour Darabi deals with conceptions of language, gender identity and sexuality. The production SAVUŠUN (2018) was inspired by the mourning ceremonies of the Muharram and deals with question of vulnerability and great emotions like mourning and fear. In May 2021, they created MOWGLI inspired by the jungle as an infinite territory at the crossroads of contemporary myths. In December 2021, they will create NATURAL DRAMA a solo questioning the concept of “Nature”.
