In SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME, a folk tradition, which is threatened with extinction, is revived: the Polka Chinata. In December 2018, Alessandro Sciarroni came across this dance originating from Bologna, which was only practised by five people in Italy at the time. This courtship dance, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, was originally performed by men only. Together with the dancers Gianmaria Borzillo and Giovanfrancesco Giannini, in SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME Alessandro Sciarroni works with the steps of Polka Chinata and develops a contemporary dance performance, which invokes the past and the tradition and continues them. Energetically, the two dancers perform the physically demanding, almost acrobatic dance to electronic music. SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME is a virtuoso exercise, a whirling embrace, which is constantly changing between competition and tenderness. The production explores forgotten perspectives and critically calls into question conventional meanings of masculinity.
At SPIELART, Alessandro Sciarronis's work FOLK-S – WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW? will also be shown.
