FILM PROGRAMME
Kek-huat Lau | Hong Kong Documentary Filmmakers (Taipei | Hong Kong)
Schedule
We present two documentary films, accompanying the theatre performances and installations of WHEN MEMORIES MEET, at the Museum 5 Kontinente.
15:30 – 17:00
ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE
83 minutes
Originating from the theme of his frequently absent father, Malayan director Kek-huat Lau deals with his grandfather to whose existence only a portrait photo still attests. As a communist fighter for decolonisation and independence, his life was wiped from the country’s historiography. The film reports on the same events as A NOTIONAL HISTORY but focuses on the conflict between political action and individual needs.
17:00 – 18:30
INSIDE THE RED BRICK WALL
88 minutes
In mid-November 2019, a group of protesters against the extradition act in Hong Kong retreated into the stronghold that is the Polytechnic University – the police blocking all exits. The film documents several (for the most part) failed escape attempts and, finally, the dramatic hours when the protesters discussed the decisive question whether to risk one last escape attempt or rather to surrender.
