“Fear is a world” the philosopher Paul Virilio stated in 2010 in view of the financial market crisis and the global war against terror. By that he meant that the panic had become total, all-embracing. We live in an age of fear. It construes friend and foe, inside and outside, need for security and security policy. The global community has disintegrated into a multiplicity of simultaneous worlds of fear. No rational arguments can penetrate these hermetic filter bubbles. Virilio states, that acceleration has transformed the light of enlightenment into the terror of lightspeed. In the framework of GLOBAL ANGST, these fearful worlds are brought together in an affect-political intervention. In Munich, the safest city in Germany, a coalition of the frightened will form on Halloween. In three performative situations, a selection of local and international fears will become manifested in artistic, academic and political contributions.
In the Muffathalle, the “Parlament der Angst” (Parliament of Fear) will meet on the 29th and 30th October. Here, viewers will become Members of Parliament, and together with musicians, performers, thinkers, and politicians, they will summon the fears of our time. On the 31st of October, these fears will be carried through the city centre of Munich in a parade, with activists and local and international artists participating, and then finally they will be set alight in a ceremonious ritual at the former Olympic site.
In cooperation with Radio 80000, GLOBAL ANGST events will also be broadcast via radio. English-speaking guests can pick up a device at the entrance to listen to the events in English via our live stream. During the parade and the ritual there will be a live coverage via the stream. This can be called up on the smartphone.
PARLAMENT
In the Parliament of Fear, audience members and speakers summon the world’s fears together. The first day of the session begins with a talk by Timnit Gebru, an AI ethicist recently fired by Google, on the dangers posed to marginalized people by large-scale language models in machine learning. This will be followed up by the President of the World Uyghur Congress, Dolkun Isa, with remarks on the genocide of the Uyghur minority in China. The second day of the session, Kai Burmeister talks about employees’ fear of climate change and green technologies. This is followed by a problematization of the dangerous connection between immunity and community. Together with cultural theorist Klaus Theweleit, sociologist Paula-Irene Villa Braslavsky discusses fascism as a bodily state of anxiety-filled men, and author Bini Adamczak argues for a materialist analysis of anxiety. These contributions are framed by greetings and interventions from the civil society groups involved in the parade.
But it is simply impossible to overcome fear with just language. In this meeting, we will also listen to unique music by Zachary Watkins and members of The Notwist, as well as lecture performances of Slavs and Tatars and Heba Y. Amin. Moreover, the setting will become an art in its own right: The viewers will be involved in the discourse by parliamentary procedures, and they will actively take part in determining which fears are to be sent to the parade and the ritual.
PARADE
Meeting Point: Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Akademiestraße 2–4, 80799 München and Radio 80000
On Sunday, the day before All Saints’ Day, the fears collected in Parliament will be carried through downtown Munich in a Parade of Fear. The procession will consist of civil society groups such as #ausspekuliert, the Bavarian Refugee Council, the Molestia fraternity, Extinction Rebellion, Randgruppenkrawall, the World Uyghur Congress, and others. It will include specially created contributions by artists such as Chicks on Speed, Der Plan, Jesaja Rüschenschmidt, Ogutu Muraya, Laura Ziegler, Stephan Janitzky and Quinsy Gario.
The parade and its audience will kick off at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) and move along Leopoldstraße towards the Olympiapark, where artist Jörg Besser’s Wicker Man, a huge human-like figure made of wicker, will welcome the participants and spectators. Here a parliament delegation will hand over the collected fears to the master of ceremonies, Anna McCarthy.
RITUAL
Meeting Point: Parkplatz Olympia-Eissportzentrum, Spiridon-Louis-Ring
As the grand finale of GLOBAL ANGST, Anna McCarthy stages a radical abstract opera ritual to tame the world’s fears. By igniting the Global Angst wicker man with a closing ceremony that manifests new shapes from the fire, symbolically countering its initially destructive nature and often ritualistic affiliations to bigotry (be it witch hunts, book burning or the Ku Klux Klan), Anna McCarthy reclaims it as an element for replenishment and rebirth. In a theatrical and musical rendition, she takes on the persona of Lucy Strike to call out the wicker man, honouring current and past victims of bigotry and violence, including Oury Jalloh who was burnt to death in his cell 2005 in Dessau, Bavarian teenager Anneliese Michel who, in the 1970’s, due to her epilepsy, underwent 67 exorcisms initiated by her parents together with the Catholic Church, as well as nods to theatrical political actions such as W.I.T.C.H. (“Women Interested in Toppling Consumer Holidays”) or the 1967 Exorcism of the Pentagon “Out demons, out!”.
For those not physically present: Join the exorcism ritual in mind - Turn on, Tune in, Exorcise out. Transmitted live on the 31st of October 2021 via radio 80000. We call all witches worldwide to join us with a candle and a bowl of water at 5 pm CET to tune in for one hour, sit down, set body to receive mode, turn palms upwards, close eyes and: Together, with us, exorcise the Angst in a global ritual.
