To process the shock suffered from the loss of his Belarus home, performer and choreographer Igor Shugaleev completely surrenders himself to the pull of Berlin rave culture. The “auto-biographical mono performance manifesto” is an examination of the personal experience of traumatic obsession and the indefatigable quest for freedom. ICH HEISSE FRAU TROFFEA retraces the steps of said Miss Troffea who suddenly started dancing on the streets of Strasbourg one morning in 1518, unable to stop despite utter exhaustion and bloodied feet. Her days and nights of dancing provoked a dance epidemic that continued for weeks. In drug-induced intoxication, a partygoer experiences undreamt-of freedoms in communication and movement: In ecstasy, he loses the quality of his movement to then retrieve it. Simultaneously physical and poetic, an intense bodily ceremony unfolds that tells a whole country’s medical case history as well as of the obsessive search for healing through freedom.
Biography
Igor Shugaleev, freelance actor, performer, and choreographer, graduated from the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts. Apart from his collaborations with such institutions as the Belarus Free Theater (Minsk-London), the TOK Theater (Minsk) as well as with the Nowy Teatr (Warsaw), he has been working on both solo projects and together with artists from various disciplines, too, since 2019. On a quest for his own artistic language, he moves along the boundaries of dance, theatre, and performance. Igor Shugaleev was born in Gomel, Belarus, and currently lives and works in Polish exile.
Sergey Shabohin is an artist, curator, director and critic, since 2015 co-founder of the Belarusian contemporary art research platform and editor-in-chief of Kalektar.org. From 2011 to 2014 founder and editor-in-chief of the portal on Belarusian contemporary art and activism ArtAktivist.org. Born in Novopolotsk (Belarus). Since 2016 lives and works in Poland.
