India has always been known as the land of spices. If we look at the stories of the different spices, we experience an imagery that blurs gender and nationality. Meet Ginger who identifies as gender neutral, Garlic the Mystic Lily, and Saffron the Seductive Drag Queen who witnessed so many wars and bloodshed. The interaction and performance is set in the timeless and gender fluid energy of a spice garden. With a playful story Varun Narain offers a complexity of layers, exploring themes like gender, sexuality, history, colonization, and mixing an ancient puppet tradition with the queer cabaret and fairy tales. All this through the eyes of spices, something we usually simply eat.
