Nick Antipov examines the emergence of the Belarusian queer movement during the 1990s, the waves of activism and especially the protests in 2020, when the authorities employed homophobia as a means of repression. In conversation with SPIELART co-curator Eva Neklyaeva and performing arts producer Maryna Dashuk, the activist sheds light on current challenges facing the queer Belarusian community, both at home as well as in exile.

Biography

Nick Antipov is a human rights activist, one of the directors of the WE HAVE NOT LIVED IN VAIN film and, among other things, one of the co-founders of ICanHelp.Host, a solidarity platform for Ukrainian war refugees. As a Leaders Europe graduate of the Obama Foundation, he holds lectures on human rights and democracy. As a political expatriate, Nick Antipov supports LGBTQ+ activists in Belarus from his current home in Berlin.
