Chiara Bersani takes both her audience and the performers into the SOTTOBOSCO – the undergrowth of an imaginary forest. In this enigmatic habitat, characterised by the experimental sounds contributed by musician Lemmo, by and by, a peculiar language develops from sounds and gestures. In the coalescence of movement, conditions, light points and textures, spaces, at times clear, at times misty, emerge, sometimes very blank, sometimes very spacious, or narrow – a living and audible environment in constant transformation.
From the collaboration with people with motor disability, Chiara Bersani explores how disabled bodies can co-exist with nature, thereby continuing her intense artistic examination of the “Political Body”. She asks: Which movements does a body, that is unable to walk around, carry out? What drives a body to move, if moving itself is an arduous task? And how do autonomously created images interact with social narratives? A voyage to dancing bodies.
Biography
Chiara Bersani is an Italian performer, writer, director, and choreographer. She is mainly active in the fields of performative arts, documentary theatre, and contemporary dance, exploring concepts of the ‘political body’ and its practices in her works. For GENTLE UNICORN, she received the 2019 UBU Prize and First Prize in the Dance Category of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019. She receives the apap – FEMINIST FUTURES support from 2020 until 2024, from a project that receives co-funding from the EU Creative Europe Programme.
