THE TACTICAL BODY: FELDHERRNHALLE
Caroline Anne Kapp & Katarína Marková (Munich | Brno)
Schedule
Premiere
The Feldherrnhalle at Munich’s Odeonsplatz – erected back in the 19 th century as a monument to military glory, later became the scene of Hitler’s failed Beer Hall Putsch. After the Nazis came to power, the monument became an official Nazi memorial to this event. It is the starting point for the artists Caroline Anne Kapp, Katarína Marková and Carla Lou Schäfer’s intermedial performance. As a “tactical body”, they investigate connections between art and militarism. They meet institutions and infrastructures, travelling to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ukraine. In doing so, they familiarise themselves with the structures and mechanisms that have historically (and again today) shaped Europe’s identity from the West to the Far East. At a time when Europe is massively re-arming and Germany is discussing the reintroduction of compulsory military service, the Feldherrnhalle will be the setting for the first performance of the “tactical body” in which video, audio and live action from the artistic research will be shown.
Biography
Caroline Anne Kapp’s works as a director and performer deal with the contamination of bodies and landscapes. She explores the violence inscribed into these actors and develops performative interventions through collaborative processes. Her pieces often process architecture in public spaces as well as in landscapes where they also increasingly are happening. Additionally, her works find their respective stages in museum or theatre settings such as in the Pinakothek der Moderne, at Märkisches Museum, at SPIELART Festival Munich, at Schauspielhaus Bochum, at Münchner Kammerspiele, at Nationaltheater Mannheim, at Theater Bremen and elsewhere. She most recently received the Exzellenzförderung of the City of Munich and started a three-year collaboration with performance artist Katarína Marková. As part of the Unpleasant Affairs label, Caroline Anne Kapp already guested at the last edition of SPIELART Festival Munich with her performative intervention PLANTAGE DACHAU.
Katarína Marková graduated in Theatre Studies from Masaryk University (Czech Republic) and received her master’s degree in Szenische Forschung from Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Her work oscillates between site-specific work, performance, and sound and is based on concrete situations, events or places that open broader connections. Primary materials in her projects are locally specific surroundings and her body interacting. Apart from her artistic practice, she accompanies and leads performance and movement workshops. She has been part of the theatercombinat public performance school since 2021. She currently lives in Brno (Czech Republic).
