FOR THE ONES WE LOVE
Gob Squad (Berlin)
Schedule
“Close your eyes and think of someone who has had an influence on you, someone you love.” The performance FOR THE ONES WE LOVE creates a space in which to celebrate these people – be they friends, relatives, or figures from the arts, philosophy, or politics. Perhaps they live faraway, or maybe they are no longer with us. The festival centre is the stage for a multi-hour performance, a subtly humorous ritual of remembrance, in which attendees engage with performers in one-to-one sessions of 10 – 15 minutes each: blindfolded, they draw a picture of the person they love on a foil, which is projected onto the wall, and explain their connection to them. The resulting portraits can be entertaining, touching, and even absurd – while also making for a communal experience that can take surprising turns. This will be the first opportunity in many years for Munich audiences to experience the internationally acclaimed German-British collective Gob Squad, who were awarded the Venice Theatre Biennale’s Silver Lion in 2024.
Biography
The seven-headed German-British performance collective Gob Squad was founded in 1994 by students of Nottingham Trent University and the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft Gießen. Ever since, they have been creating interdisciplinary and interactive works, drawing their inspiration from everyday life as well as from pop culture, film, and music. The collective embraces a freeform working method stripped of hierarchies or fixed roles and seeks to realise its projects outside of traditional cultural institutions.
