3 Questions for Denijen Pauljević

I. A QUESTION THAT IS CURRENTLY ON YOUR MIND?

In my work, I move between different disciplines and realities. I am interested in how language and its evolution can facilitate dialogue and debate, particularly for those who are often marginalised. I am increasingly concerned about the future of Germany in light of the political shift to the right. Nevertheless, there is hope. For example, the student protests in Serbia demonstrate that significant social resistance and engagement are still possible in the heart of Europe.

II. WHAT ROLE DOES IMPROVISATION PLAY FOR YOU?

For me, improvisation is a survival strategy in all areas of life, including on stage and in writing. It's the ability to cope with the unpredictable and use the moment creatively. As a singer and actor, I know that the most important things often happen unexpectedly. Improvisation also plays a major role in my cultural management work – it's about being willing to work with what's available to create new spaces.

III. WHICH BOOK ACCOMPANIES YOU AT THE MOMENT?

Book: ICH UND MEINE MUTTER (FIERCE ATTACHMENTS: A MEMOIR) by Vivian Gornick – an intense reflection on relationships, memories and writing itself.

Song: PROLOG by Einstürzende Neubauten – the lyrics question the way history is told and perceived.
