In JAHIMU S-SUWARI [eng. “The Hell of Images”], Lebanese artist Elie Mouhanna and musician and sound designer Anthony Sahyoun interrogate the power of images in a world where visual overload is the norm. Their performance depicts a reality in which images no longer serve as a form of orientation, but instead trigger a sense of destabilisation and uncertainty. The performance is based on texts composed by Elie Mouhanna, who develops his own unique formal language that combines dance and text into a poetically unified mode of communication. Oscillating between sound and speech, introspection and collective memory, a fragile composition emerges that explores issues of identity, corpo-reality, and how we perceive – and, hence, experience – the world. The culmination is the “Atlas of Terrific Images: For the Lovers of the marvelous and the sublime”, a collection of images that connects seemingly unrelated events in a broader visual context. This performance is an invitation to seek out new meanings and understandings in a world in which we are constantly subjected to visual overload.
