SCENES FROM THE LABUDOVIĆ REELS – NON-ALIGNED & CINÉ-GUERRILLAS

Director Mila Turajlić’s award-winning documentary diptych SCENES FROM THE LABUDOVIĆ REELS takes its audience back to the beginnings of the “Non-Aligned Movement”. At its centre stands the cameraman employed by Tito, Stevan Labudović, who accompanied the Yugoslav president on his “Peace Travels”. Based on hitherto unpublished 35 mm-material, the first part, NON-ALIGNED, shows recordings of Tito’s undertakings as well as the conference of the 25 Non-Aligned states in Belgrade in 1961. The second film, CINÉ-GUERRILLAS, takes a deep dive into the media debate that raged during the Algerian War of Independence in which cinema was utilised as a weapon against colonialism – primarily by artists like Stevan Labudović, whose film recordings served as a counter-narrative to French propaganda and thus provided a significant contribution to shaping opinion leaning towards the liberation movement, becoming a motor for international solidarity in the process.
