Fresia and her two closest confidantes unexpectedly become cow owners. The three are take-out food deliverers, barely scraping by at the subsistence level, and are now suddenly confronted with difficult questions: How does one care for a cow? Would it be possible to earn money with it? Would you need to kill it first? The animal becomes an absurd disruptive factor, a catalyst for existential, social and political questions – an echo to the paradoxes in Late-Stage Capitalism. Chile’s prominent playwright, director, and screenwriter Guillermo Calderón stages a dark grotesque about life on society’s fringes with VACA [eng. cow], interweaving reality and fiction, ridicule and clarity into an evening that questions theatre as a space of representation itself. At its core, according to Guillermo Calderón, lies an understanding of the process of “how people become fascists without noticing it”. A play on identities, power relations, and loss of control in an utterly mediatised world.
