THIS IS NOT AN EMBASSY (MADE IN TAIWAN)
Stefan Kaegi (Rimini Protokoll) (Berlin | Eison)
TicketsSchedule
Due to the One China policy and diplomatic pressure exerted by the People’s Republic of China, only very few states consider Taiwan an independent state, which in turn cannot deploy officially recognised embassies in countries such as Germany. Stefan Kaegi, known for his documentary theatre projects, mostly works with experts and now shows a piece featuring three Taiwanese diplomats who, within the setting of a fictitious embassy, using many images and lots of music, present differing perspectives on their country’s foreign policy, respectively. The research preceding this project was presented at SPIELART back in 2023, as part of the WHEN MEMORIES MEET programming series – in a talk with co-curator Betty Yi-Chun Chen and the founder of the Digital Diplomacy Association Taipei, Chiayo Kuo, who will be featured on stage as a performer this time. Following intensive talks with diplomats, historians and semiconductor engineers, the theatre opens a space of possibilities in which contradictory positions may exist alongside
each other, visualising the multi-layered history of a country in-between.
Biography
Stefan Kaegi currently lives between Rome, Berlin, and Switzerland, constituting the Rimini Protokoll label together with Helgard Haug and Daniel Wetzel. Both their shared productions as well as Kaegi’s independent projects are often marked by their documentary character, frequently made with people bringing specific experiences, so-called “experts”. Stefan Kaegi already guested at SPIELART five times in the past: TORERO PORTERO (2003), together with Lola Arias SOKO SÃO PAULO (2007), with Rimini Protokoll SITUATION ROOMS (2013) and WELT-KLIMAKONFERENZ (2015), with Hygiene Heute KANAL KIRCHNER (2019).
Following his military service and a journalistic career in the 1970s, David Chienkuo Wu took up work as a diplomat, with stations in South Africa, Vietnam, New Zealand, Belize, and elsewhere, for 37 years. He is a member of the KMT (Nationalist Party) and still feels connected to China through his father. David Chienkuo Wu currently serves at the Presbyterian church and harbours the desire to once advocate for the Republic of China’s (Taiwan’s) full membership status before the UN General Assembly.
After having worked for NGOs in Hungary and Greece, Chiayo Kuo founded her own organisation, the Taiwan Digital Diplomacy Association. While connecting communities in different countries through mutual interests, she provides international visibility for Taiwan. With her organisation, Chiayo Kuo educates Taiwanese about precautionary measures against Chinese cyber-attacks, opening digital communication channels between Taiwan and the rest of the world.
Born in Taiwan, growing up in Austria, the vibraphonist Debby (Szu-Ya) Wang studied in Graz, Vienna, and Boston. The start-up founded by Debby Wang’s family is one of the largest global manufacturers of bubble tea ingredients, with facilities in Taiwan, San Francisco, Texas, and Hamburg. When Wang’s father received his cancer diagnosis, his daughter promised to compose a piece narrating his success story. This is part of THIS IS NOT AN EMBASSY (MADE IN TAIWAN).
Theatre director and interdisciplinary artist Szu-Ni Wen has been occupied with her culture of origin and its history since her return to Kaohsiung from Berlin. She presents her own works at non-theatrical spaces, thereby attempting to examine the relation between urbanism and humanity with the means of memory, imagination, and identity. Szu-Ni Wen already worked with Rimini Protokoll while casting 100% KAOHSIUNG.
